Bachelor's Degree Program in Medicine

2024-2 Curriculum

Introduction

Facultad de Medicina y Nutrición, with the firm purpose of fulfilling its mission to provide comprehensive education for physicians and graduate professionals with scientific, humanistic, and ethical competencies aimed at promoting the biopsychosocial well-being of individuals and society through prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and research, is committed to periodically updating the academic programs within its scope.

At the undergraduate level, the School currently offers a comprehensive curriculum that leads to the degree of Licenciado en Medicina (Bachelor´s Degree in Medicine) and has been in effect since the 2024-2 academic term. It is designed in accordance with the educational model of Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, which promotes student-centered learning through a flexible, competency-based, credit-based approach. The curriculum is organized into learning units structured according to the principles of continuity, integration, transfer, and gradual training, with a gender perspective and sustainability awareness. It is divided into three stages of training: Basic, Disciplinary, and Final; the latter corresponds to the Undergraduate Rotating Internship.

To complete the Bachelor's Degree Program in Medicine, students must earn 482 required credits, as well as a minimum of 40 elective credits, which may be obtained through different accreditation modalities. They must also pass the clinical skills examination, complete one year of Professional Community Service, pass the CENEVAL examination, and demonstrate proficiency in a second language.

Graduate Profile

Graduates of the Bachelor's Degree Program in Medicine at UABC should be able to demonstrate the following competencies within the healthcare sector:

  1. Integrate diagnoses and apply treatments for the most prevalent pathologies across different age groups, using up-to-date biomedical knowledge and evidence-based medicine to ensure safe, dignified, and efficient medical care with responsibility, social commitment, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

  2. Implement health promotion and education actions, early detection, and disease prevention through the application of Primary Health Care (PHC) strategies, in order to improve the quality of life of different population groups and promote environmental conservation, with professional ethics and sustainable responsibility.

  3. Evaluate urgent medical and surgical situations through clinical reasoning that enables them to prioritize care and apply standardized procedures within their scope of competence, in order to provide resuscitation, stabilization, and patient follow-up through the efficient use of resources, guided by bioethical principles, the value of life, and respect for individuality.

  4. Establish effective communication processes with patients and their families through the application of non-clinical skills and abilities, in order to provide high-quality, compassionate medical care with empathy, legal responsibility, and interdisciplinary collaboration.


Graduation Requirements

To obtain the degree in Medicine, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Complete all required and elective credits in the curriculum.
  2. Complete the required Professional Community Service.
  3. Demonstrate English proficiency at the B1 level on the global scale, which corresponds to Level VI according to the UABC Foreign Languages Program.
  4. Proof of having taken the EGEL-CENEVAL examination.

Occupational Field

Graduates of the Bachelor's Degree Program in Medicine will be prepared to participate in comprehensive medical care for individual, family, and community health, particularly at the primary care level, with a focus on health promotion, prevention, and outpatient treatment of the most common diseases.

Their professional activities may be carried out in:

  • Hospitals and clinics of public institutions (IMSS, ISESALUD, ISSSTECALI, and ISSSTE)
  • Private hospitals and healthcare facilities
  • Private medical practices
  • Patients' homes in urban and rural communities
  • The manufacturing industry and service sector
  • Educational institutions and research centers
