Institutional Academic Advising Program

Introduction

The Institutional Academic Advising Program (PIAA) of the Facultad de Medicina y Nutrición at the UABC is founded on the principle that every student is a whole person, entitled to develop their potential under conditions of equity and opportunity, and deserving of respect.

PIAA was created to support students who experience academic difficulties related to low academic performance and who wish to continue their professional studies. The program recognizes the need to prevent academic dropout by developing strategies that help students strengthen their learning and successfully complete their degree program.

In this context, the program is conceived as a tool that provides students with an environment that supports learning, encourages the exchange of ideas, promotes the discussion of academic topics, and accompanies them throughout their educational process, fostering equal opportunities among the student community.

PIAA Organization

  • PIAA is affiliated with the Academic Office, which shall appoint a program coordinator responsible for organizing and supervising the program to ensure its proper operation.
  • The Office of the Registrar shall identify the courses with high failure rates at the end of each semester.
  • The courses eligible for academic advising shall be determined according to the failure rate and at the request of regular students who wish to reinforce a specific topic.
  • The Educational and Academic Advising Office shall guide students who require academic advising and submit the list to the PIAA coordinator.
  • The program coordinator shall contact the faculty members teaching the corresponding courses, requesting the course syllabus and a proposal of students, serving as assistants under the different learning modalities, who may provide academic advising.
  • An advisor may provide academic advising to one student or to a group of up to 20 students.
  • Each advising session shall last a maximum of two hours and shall be held at least once a week.
  • Academic advising may only take place within campus facilities.
  • The program shall be evaluated at the end of each semester, and adjustments shall be made to its operating mechanisms based on the information provided by the PIAA coordinator, the Office of the Registrar, the Associate Director, faculty members, advisors, and students receiving academic advising.

Rights of Students Participating in PIAA

  • To receive timely and appropriate academic advising to support successful completion of the course in which they are experiencing low academic performance.
  • To freely express their ideas and concerns regarding their academic advisor, the course, and the institution in general.

Responsibilities of Students Receiving Academic Advising

  • To attend all advising sessions punctually at the schedule agreed upon with the PIAA coordinator, faculty member, advisor, student, and/or group of students.
