The Medical Specialty Program in Pediatrics of Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC) is part of the Medical Specialty Programs endorsed by Facultad de Medicina y Nutrición, Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud, and Escuela de Ciencias de la Salud.

The program aims to train specialists with clinical, scientific, and humanistic competencies for the comprehensive care of children and adolescents through a competency-based educational model, service-based learning, research, and medical education.

The specialty is offered in an in-person, hospital-based, full-time format, in accordance with NOM-001-SSA-2023 and the Programa Único de Especialidades Médicas (PUEM).

Mission

To train specialists in Pediatrics who are capable of integrating clinical care with research and educational activities in order to prevent, diagnose, treat, and resolve health problems within their field of specialization, with a strong humanistic perspective, ethical and bioethical principles, a vocation for service, and a scientific foundation in professional practice.

Vision

By 2035, the Medical Specialty Program in Pediatrics will be recognized for training highly qualified specialists committed to the health of the pediatric population and distinguished as leaders in clinical innovation, applied research, and social responsibility, with an approach grounded in equity, inclusion, excellence, innovation, and interculturality.

General Objective

To train specialists in Pediatrics who, through advanced knowledge in medicine and technology, are able to analyze and synthesize comprehensive strategies for the care of children and adolescents; apply ethical and bioethical principles in their professional practice; resolve health problems specific to the specialty; and develop pediatric research and education activities.

Specific Objectives

• Train specialists capable of developing interdisciplinary care plans that include prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation for pediatric patients, based on scientific evidence and adapted to individual characteristics.


• Promote research activities in Pediatrics through the design, implementation, and evaluation of projects that contribute to the advancement of knowledge.


• Promote the comprehensive development of skills, abilities, and attitudes aimed at competent, ethical, and committed performance in the educational field.


• Train specialists with an ethical, humanistic, and socially responsible approach.

Graduate Profile

Graduates of the Medical Specialty Program in Pediatrics will have the professional, clinical, and humanistic competencies necessary to address health and disease processes in pediatric patients in community and hospital settings.

Upon completion of the program, graduates will be competent to:

• Provide comprehensive care to pediatric patients throughout the different stages of growth and development.


• Identify risks and predisposing factors for the development of pediatric diseases, ensuring timely and preventive interventions.


• Implement primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary prevention strategies.


• Diagnose and manage the most common conditions affecting the pediatric population through prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation actions.


• Perform clinical procedures specific to Pediatrics that are essential for the comprehensive care of patients.


• Apply clinical, epidemiological, and basic research methodologies aimed at strengthening medical practice and generating knowledge.


• Practice the profession with a high scientific standard, ethical responsibility, and social commitment.

Program Structure

The Medical Specialty Program in Pediatrics has a duration of three years and is offered in an in-person, hospital-based, full-time format.

The program is organized around three core medical functions:

Clinical Care

Develops clinical, technical, ethical, and communication competencies through supervised medical practice.

Research

Promotes critical thinking, methodological skills, and evidence-based academic production.

Education

Promotes the development of the resident as a reflective professional and health educator.

These functions are developed transversally and progressively throughout the three years of training.

Research Areas

Human Growth and Development in Childhood and Adolescence

This area studies growth and development processes during childhood and adolescence, considering genetic, nutritional, environmental, and social factors.

Genetics and Metabolism

This area focuses on the study, detection, and management of hereditary disorders and inborn errors of metabolism, promoting timely diagnosis and treatment.

Neurodevelopment and Prevention of Neurological Disorders in Early Childhood and Adolescence

This area directs research toward the early identification of neurodevelopmental disorders and the design of timely intervention strategies.

Infectious Diseases in the Pediatric Population

This area seeks to develop evidence-based strategies for the prevention, epidemiological surveillance, and comprehensive care of infectious diseases in the pediatric population.

Diagnosis and Management of Cancer in the Pediatric Population

This area promotes the development and application of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic tools to improve prognosis and quality of life for pediatric patients with cancer.

Admission Requirements

• Proof of selection through ENARM.


• Medical degree and professional license, or proof that these documents are in process.


• Pass the English language examination established by UABC.


• Birth certificate.


• Two letters of recommendation.


• Pass the medical and psychometric examinations.


• Interview with the specialty faculty.


• Acceptance letter from the corresponding teaching hospital.


• CURP and RFC.


• Curriculum vitae with supporting documents.


• Certificate of no disqualification from public service.


• Employment status certificate.


• Medical health certificate.


• Four child-size photographs.

Continuation Requirements

• Complete the assigned clinical rotations and academic activities.


• Pass the theoretical and practical evaluations.


• Submit the annual clinical portfolio in a timely manner.


• Maintain a minimum weighted average of 80.


• Follow the thesis timeline.


• Comply with the attendance requirements established by current regulations.


• Pass the annual promotion examination.


• Maintain ethical and professional conduct.

Graduation Requirements

• Complete a minimum of 725 credits (693 required and 32 elective credits).


• Pass all courses.


• Complete the rotations established by the healthcare institution.


• Pass the annual promotion examinations.


• Pass the certification examination of the Consejo Mexicano de Pediatría.


• Prepare, present, and defend the thesis.


• Have no outstanding administrative debts or disciplinary sanctions.


• Comply with the requirements established by UABC and the participating healthcare institutions.
